Welcome to The Corner Cottage

The Corner Cottage is one of Singleton’s iconic, historic houses. Since 1731 it has housed or played host to esteemed residents and visitors to the village.  Most notably Doctor Garratt OBE, MD, pioneering physician and beloved in the locale, made this his home and, somewhat setting a trend, would vacate the house during Goodwood Race Week.  Famously, renowned actress, Lily Langtry, was spotted taking tea with King Edward VII  in the garden.  More recently The Corner Cottage was home to author, Ian Serraillier, equally esteemed as forward-thinking educator and best known for his international novel, The Silver Sword. Even now Singleton residents fondly remember visiting him and his family to play in the beautiful walled garden at the heart of the village. His daughter, Helen, was hugely helpful to us in the restoration of the house, recalling that jockeys would arrive in numbers to bed down in the loft on the eve of the great races.

We took over the house in 2014 and are its current guardians. It was by then completely derelict, with its original elements all but hidden from view. But as of the summer of 2018, a full restoration of the listed building is complete. The Corner Cottage is entirely renovated by local craftsmen with materials authentic to its origins, encasing state-of-the-art contemporary living.

We have fashioned the “cottage” to offer three bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms, occupying the first floor and in what was the “Jockey’s Loft”; one double, and two king-size.

We have also made a self-contained two bedroom cottage from the wing of the house once known by the community as the village surgery. As a nod to history we have named it “The Old Surgery”. It has its own separate entrances and french windows that flow onto a bespoke patio surrounded by the walled garden, which we are delighted to share with our visitors.

Our own quarters at the back of the house are where we live with Colin the part-time Corgi. He likes to welcome well behaved female dogs but is somewhat less keen on male competitors. So we ask our visitors to please keep this in mind when considering whether we can provide the right match for you.

With its inglenooks and wood-burners, and capacious yet cosy furnishings, The Corner Cottage is ideal for a relaxing evening. Or stroll for supper to The Partridge Inn at the back of the house, or a little further across the meadows under Levin Down to get to The Fox Goes Free. We have listed the superb choice of activities and places to visit within immediate striking distance. Some are walkable and all are worth exploring.

As relative newcomers to Singleton we already feel deeply committed to the village and its surrounds. The South Downs National Park offers a galaxy of riches. To be surrounded by untouched, natural beauty offers untold balm, while the bustle of Chichester with its theatre, cinemas and galleries is but six miles away. In the other direction, the town of Midhurst offers anything needed for day to day in the most delightful setting. Easy to find, easy to park, not so easy to be frugal with so much on offer.
